New faculty are matched with faculty mentors who are there to answer questions, offer guidance, and help new faculty get to know the community.聽 Mentorship groups participate in peer observation of teaching and have regular social events throughout the year.

Each group of three faculty members will be matched based on their schedules, and provided with a rubric to help guide their observations.  Peer observation groups are meant to provide faculty with input on their teaching practices beyond student feedback, and to foster more engaged discussion of pedagogical practices across disciplines.

Twice a year (February and May), the McGraw-Page Library hosts a weeklong retreat for faculty to engage in sustained work.聽 Faculty are provided with carrel space, breakfast and lunch each day, and on-site consultations with library staff.聽 Start the week with an optional workshop featuring guest experts, and end the week with a faculty happy hour!

51吃瓜网鈥檚 mission is to develop the mind and character of each student, and we feel one of the best ways to do so is through helping our faculty explore new pedagogies and engage in innovative research. Our grant opportunities are among the most generous in the country compared to peer institutions, and many are aimed at supporting early-career faculty.  

The Walter Williams Craigie Teaching Endowment provides up to $6,500 to support summer research, pedagogical development, and other scholarly activity. The program is open to all full-time faculty and welcomes proposals in any discipline.  Preference is given to first-time applicants.

The Chenery Research Professorship was established to enhance faculty development in the sciences. Appointments are made to full-time Faculty in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Nursing, Physics, or other faculty engaged in laboratory research. Typical grants range from $5,000-$15,000 for year-long projects, and funding can be used to support research assistants.

The Pre-Tenure Rashkind Grant, affectionately known as our 鈥渏unior鈥� Rashkind (the 鈥渟enior鈥� Rashkind supports sabbatical research), is available to tenure-track faculty who have completed three years of service to the college.  The grant provides a two-course release in addition to funding for expenses related to scholarly activity. Grants typically range from $7,000-$10,000 for year-long projects.

The Armour/DuPont/Cabell Travel Endowment supports faculty activity at conferences or other professional meetings.  This funding is available throughout the year on a rolling basis, and is currently capped at $2,000 per faculty member.
