These January term seminars are available for students looking to reset or take a different path. Especially designed for students who aren’t happy with their progress in the fall semester!

Two programs – Launch, for first-year students, and Discovery, open to all students – provide focused, staff-led learning aimed at helping students engage differently in academics and co-curricular activities at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø. These new seminars begin January 2024.

Launch

academic support seminar for first-year students

Students who are looking for more support in their academics might be interested in Launch. Launch is a one-hour January term course specifically designed for students going into their first J-term with a GPA under 2.0. The curriculum helps students form good academic habits and refine their learning skills. Details about how to enroll will be distributed directly to students.

Discovery

success seminar for all students

Discovery provides an intentional opportunity to identify your strengths and coach you to use them effectively within the classroom and outside of it. This seminar is an opportunity for students interested in reimagining their college experience with a focus on growth and foundational skills. Offered in January term, with monthly extensions into the spring seminar, the Discovery cohort will focus on academic skills, learning strategies, and connections to the community. This seminar is not exclusively focused on academic skills, nor is it meant to replace other academic support functions on campus.

What does Discovery look like?

The curriculum centers around strengthening academic skills, examining helpful college strategies, identifying personal strengths using the Gallup StrengthsFinder, and experiencing a final capstone intended to launch the students into a successful spring semester. The experiential capstone will specifically aim to enhance professional development and personal wellness strategies for students as they face academic challenges.

Students will attend a 90-minute seminar, rich in food and fun, twice a week during J-term. Students are assigned to their section based upon the preferences they share on the Discovery Interest Form.

We hope to hear from you!
