Parental leave is a complex issue, and the College understands the need for good communication, planning, and fair negotiation. To that end, the College provides a Parental Leave Advocate (PLA) to assist Faculty Members in negotiating parental leave agreements.

The PLA is appointed for a three-year term by the Provost and is a member of the Nondiscrimination Committee. The PLA must be a tenured member of the faculty and have a demonstrated understanding of parental leave.  The PLA cannot be a member of the Committee on the Faculty.

The PLA will:

  1. Assist Faculty Members in negotiating any necessary accommodations with the Department Chair and the Provost.
  2. Inform Faculty Members and Department Chairs of parental leave options.
  3. Maintain records of leave plans and communicate them to Human Resources, the Department Chair, and the Provost’s Office.
