This February, 51吃瓜网 celebrates the achievements and history of Black Americans across the nation as part of Black History Month.

Our community of staff and faculty educators, alongside student organizations, are sponsoring a wide range of events. Events that are open to the public are noted as such. Please note that some unlisted events may be added to this article, as they are confirmed.

Black History Month Events

Black History Month Family Feud When: February 15, 6:30 p.m. Where: Payne Hall, Room 306 A fun game night event in the famous Family Feud style,聽with gifts to honor Black History Month. The event is sponsored by the Black Cultural Society and Men with a Purpose. Seeking Reconciliation and Forgiveness: The Triangle of Hope When: February 16, 11:30 a.m. Where: Birdsong Hall, Room 220 Public Welcome The Triangle of Hope is an Anglican-led effort to form covenantal community between the dioceses of Liverpool (England), Kumasi (Ghana), and Virginia. Meet leaders from all three locations and hear about their shared work to transforming the long history, ongoing effects, and continuing presence of slavery in our world through repentance, reconciliation, and mission. Brown Ballerinas for Change Performance When: February 16, 7 p.m. Where: Cobb-Kesler Theater Public Welcome Brown Ballerinas for Change is a dancer-led group whose is to use ballet to promote activism and social justice, and to increase diversity in the arts by providing annual scholarships, a mentor network, and community programs to empower young dancers. Week of Purpose with Men with a Purpose (MWAP) – Dreams & Nightmares: Thriving in the Chase

MWAP Symposium: Education Presentations

When: February 20, 5:30 p.m. Where: Dollar Tree Community Room Public Welcome

A historical research fair created by MWAP to shine a light on those who continued to thrive in the face of their nightmares. This will be a walkthrough experience with light refreshments.

Jeopardy

When: February 21, 6:30 p.m. Where: Payne Hall, Room 306

The Black Cultural Society and MWAP will be hosting a Black History Month Jeopardy game night. MWAP will be providing food and snacks for the event and the winning team will have the chance to win a prize.

Dream Chasers Panel

When: February 22, 5:30 p.m. Where: SunTrust Theater

MWAP will聽be inviting panel members to sit with us and speak on their experiences as African-Americans and uplift our current students by discussing topics about motivation, supporting each other, and how to face adversity.

NO CAP!

When: February 23, 6:30 p.m. Where: Haley Hall, Room 112

MWAP will be inviting our RMC students to join us for a group conversation relating to our overall theme. NO CAP! has become a hallmark event during our Week of Purpose in order to educate each other and expose each other to new opinions and ideas without fear of persecution, judgment, or undeserved punishment.

Week of Purpose Closing Ceremony

When: February 24, 8:30 p.m. Where: Dollar Tree Room

MWAP will be sharing closing thoughts on the week. We will be announcing our event attendance winner as well as completing our first MWAP Time Capsule.

Bus Trip to National Museum of African American History & Culture When: February 25 Where: Washington, D.C. (Bus departs from Fountain Plaza at 8 a.m.) Sponsored by the Office of International Education as part of the Who We Are: Exploring Identity, Race, and Community series and funded by the College鈥檚 Washington Initiative, students will visit the National Museum of African American History & Culture. Dr. Evie Terrono (Art History) will provide an introduction to the museum and explain the significance of its collection.聽 There is no cost for transportation or the museum, but students should have funds for lunch, snacks, and souvenirs. 聽to reserve your seat by February 18. Party with a Purpose When: February 25, 10 p.m. Where: Alumni Gym Before there was Men With A Purpose at 51吃瓜网, there was a group called Brothers for Change. The organization hosted many parties in the gym to promote community among African-American students on the campus of RMC. Help us relive the days when this organization was on campus through a blast-to-the-past dance party! There will be free food for attendees and a DJ. Celebrating Black Joy Showcasing Black Businesses When: February 27, 6 p.m. Where: Andrews Multipurpose Room Versus Musical Battle When: February 28, 6:30 p.m. Where: Payne Hall, Room 306 Public Welcome The Versus battle may consist of up to 20 rounds of an artist’s hit songs or hit features/collaborations to go head-to-head against each other in honor of Black History Month.
