Lee B. Spencer, Jr. to Receive Honorary Degree

51³Ô¹ÏÍø will confer an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Lee B. Spencer, Jr., a Trustee Emeritus of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø who had a career of significance as a governmental official, practicing lawyer and corporate official, during the College’s 2024 Commencement ceremony.

A member of ¸é²Ñ°ä’s Board of Trustees from 1998-2010 and again from 2011-2021, Spencer has been a lifelong supporter of education in addition to his distinguished legal career.

A son of two faculty members at Oklahoma Baptist University, Spencer earned his A.B. from Princeton University in 1965 and his J.D. from Yale University Law School in 1969, in addition to graduate studies supported by a fellowship at the University of Strasbourg in France.

Spencer worked as an official with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission from 1976-1983. He was awarded the SEC’s Distinguished Service Award, and also awarded the Rank of Distinguished Executive by the President of the United States. He then served as a partner at the international law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher from 1983-1994. He joined Prudential Securities Group in 1994 as Executive VP and General Counsel, and after his retirement became the President of West Hill Properties, LLC in New York City.

While on the RMC Board of Trustees, Spencer served as the board’s secretary from 2014-2019, and its vice chair from 2019-2021. He and his wife, Alice Dana Spencer, are directors of the Arthur D. Dana Foundation and together have facilitated generous gifts of over $1 million, supporting efforts across campus including Brock Hall, the Bassett Internship Program, athletics, and the RMC Annual Fund.

Spencer’s dedication to education is exemplified by stints as a teaching assistant at Yale and an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center from 1978-1984. He has also served on governing bodies of institutes at the University of California in San Diego, the University of Southern California, and the Northwestern University School of Law. Spencer also served on the boards of the Salisbury School and the Hewitt School.

¸é²Ñ°ä’s Commencement ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 26 at the Frank E. Brown Fountain Plaza. Tickets are not required for the event, which will also be live streamed.
